WHAT’S NEW FROM FALL QUILT MARKET

Fall Quilt Market may have come and gone, but many of the new collections and patterns introduced there are just beginning to hit the retail market—and others will follow in the months to come. For this edition of “What’s Trending,” we’re taking a look at some of the new products and trends that caught our eye in Houston, and that you can expect to see on shelves (and online) now and in the near future!

Succulents and cacti continue to be a popular design motif among new fabric collections and quilt patterns. At the Moda Fabrics booth, we spotted the Flying Cactus quilt by Annie Brady, made with fabrics from her upcoming Yucatan collection.

And among the new quilt patterns on display at designer Laura Heine’s Fiberworks booth was the Collage Cactus Sampler, which includes a variety of cactus blocks created using Heine’s signature collage quilt techniques.

The new Terrarium collection from Robert Kaufman designer Elizabeth Hartman features succulents and other plants among its prints. And Hartman’s Greenhouse quilt pattern—available in three sizes—includes rows of potted plants, with succulents and cacti among them.

Over at the Michael Miller Fabrics booth, we spied these adorable fabric cacti (pictured) created using Patty Sloniger’s newest collection, Flower Shop. The collection itself features the greenhouse-themed “Pretty Plants,” as well as vibrantly hued botanical prints, floral-themed newsprint pattern, and two “Bouquet Making” prints.

Plants and flowers are a perennial favorite (see what we did there!), and at this year’s fall Quilt Market, “garden” seemed to be the word of the day…or season? There was the fruit-and-flora themed Berkshire Garden by Lila Tueller for Riley Blake Designs, the vibrant, painterly Painted Garden by Crystal Manning for Moda Fabrics, the sweet Garden Sanctuary by Rae Ritchie for Dear Stella, and the bohemian Elephant's Garden by Printfresh Studio for Clothworks.

Leslie Tucker Jenison’s new Urban Garden collection for RJR Fabrics features textural prints inspired by the designer’s garden and her love of dyed and painted cloth. Jenison even hung a "vertical garden" in her booth, complete with fabric succulents…a tie to one of fall Market’s other big trends.

The Hank & Clementine collection by Susan Emory for Michael Miller Fabrics offers a different take on the theme, in the form of the “garden” gnome. In addition to the gnome-themed “Hank” print, the collection also includes florals, fruits, stripes, small prints, and “Clementine” the squirrel. Emory (of Swirly Girl Designs) also created three quilt patterns for the collection, all of which feature a large Hank the Gnome.

Fans of the diminutive garden dwellers might also like the A Tale of 2 Gnomes quilt pattern from 2 Abbey Lane. The pattern includes two options for creating the quilt—one featuring rows of gnomes and toadstools, and the other featuring holiday-hued gnomes and Christmas trees.

Speaking of Christmas, we spotted several fun holiday-themed collections debuting at Quilt Market, including the charming Sugarplum by Heather Ross for Windham Fabrics. Sugarplum features sweet, storybook characters (clearly a nod to The Nutcracker Suite), peppermints, plaids, and Christmas-colored dots. The collection also includes four SKUs printed on flannel, perfect for snuggly winter projects.

Holiday-themed offerings from Moda include the new Swell Christmas collection by Urban Chiks and Vintage Holiday by Bonnie and Camille, the latter of which is also the star of the design duo’s Winterville, Sugar Plums, Christmas Cheer, and Deck the Halls quilt patterns. Vintage Christmas also includes a variety of flannel prints.

Other favorite new product finds are the equestrian-themed Purebred II by Erin Michael for Moda Fabrics and Derby Day, Melissa Mortenson’s newest collection for Riley Blake; the Geo Rex quilt pattern from new Market exhibitor Flying Parrot Quilts, and the Esoterra collection by Katarina Rocella for Art Gallery Fabrics, both of which offer a sophisticated take on the dinosaur motif; and two fun and colorful new collections from Windham Fabrics—the text-themed Wordplay by Sarah Fielke, and Foundation, the first-ever fabric line from Shayla Wolf, one half of design duo Sassafras Lane Designs.
