Christmas in September…

HOLIDAY PRINTS HITTING SHELVES NOW

Maybe it’s the recent 15-degree temperature drop here in Texas, maybe it’s the new pine-scented air freshener hanging in eInsider’s car, or maybe it’s the fact that virtually every fabric website we’ve visited in the last week has featured at least one “now shipping” holiday-themed print, but we’re feeling oddly Christmas-y…in September.

Sure, it’ll be a few months, countless pumpkins, turkeys, and—oh yeah—a Quilt Market before we’ll actually reach the Christmas season. But projects take time to complete, and all of those fun and festive holiday fabrics hitting shelves now are just begging to be made into quilts, table runners, tree skirts, stockings, and all manner of kitschy goodness.

So, we’re celebrating Christmas in September this edition with a look at some of the coolest holiday-themed fabrics, patterns, and books on the market. Turn up the AC, make a cup of cocoa, and dig in!

Festive
by Jo Clark for Cloud9 Fabrics

This new collection from British designer/illustrator Clark keeps true to its name with an eclectic mix of festive prints including “Cosy Snowmen,” “Mistletoe,” “Fairy Lights,” “Christmas Stockings,” “Gingerbread People,” “Peppermint Twist,” “Holly,” and “Snowflakes.” And its simple, but colorful bright-and-white palette really brings the Christmas cheer.

Cloud9 offers a free accompanying project sheet for the Nice Package Wall Quilt pattern by Michelle Engel Bencsko featuring the Festive collection.

Merry Matryoshka
by Carly Griffith for Riley Blake Designs

Christmas + nesting dolls = the too-cute Merry Matryoshka fabric collection. Each of the collection’s main prints—in light blue, pink, and white—features Griffith’s holiday-hued take on Matryoshka, or Russian nesting dolls. Coordinating prints include red and green ogee designs, blue and white snowflakes, and red, green, and multi-stripe prints.

The collection also includes three apron panel prints for creating a fun and festive apron to put you in the mood for some holiday cooking.

Other recent collections from Riley Blake include Santa Express by Doodlebug Design, Postcards for Santa from My Mind's Eye, and Christmas Knit Basics.

Winter Wonderland
by Heather Rosas for Camelot Fabrics

Arriving in shops in October, this winter-themed collection is perfect for a children’s holiday project or one that isn’t overtly, well, holiday themed. The collection features “Ice Princesses,” penguins, polar bears, foxes, and birds, as well as coordinating tree and snowflake prints. And the Winter Wonderland color palette includes chilly blues, grays, pinks, and a snowy white.

Jingle 3
by Ann Kelle  for Robert Kaufman Fabrics

One of eInsider’s favorite holiday-themed fabric lines has to be the Jingle collection from designer Ann Kelle, whose use of bright, playful colors is especially well suited to cheerful Christmas prints. This year, Kelle added new prints to the line, including reindeer, doves, polar bears, Christmas bulbs, and—yes—Scottie dogs in Santa hats.

The entire collection’s color stories include Red/Green (bold reds and greens offset by pure black and white) and Aqua/Navy (bright blues, aquas, reds, and greens accented by white). Jingle 3 is also available in flannel.

Other holiday-themed favorites from Robert Kaufman include Holly Jolly Christmas 4 by Mary Lake-Thompson, Merry Stitchmas by Cynthia Frenette, and the most recent addition to their How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Seuss line.

Winter Novelties III
from Kanvas Studio by Benartex

A Christmas collection with a sense of humor, Winter Novelties III includes a little of everything—affectionate penguins, over-the-top gingerbread houses, peppermint swirls, and a print devoted solely to Santa’s impressive moustache (which, we should add, actually glitters).

These prints are best paired with solid or texture prints, but would make a great addition to a quilt, stocking, or other fun holiday project.

Benartex also offers the snowman-themed Frosty Forest collection, Happy Holiday Coordinates, and the stocking-centric Santa's Here.

Joyeux Noel
from French General for Moda Fabrics

For a more sophisticated take on the holiday theme, the Joyeux Noel collection features the French Country style for which French General designer Kari Meng is best known. Its refined, traditional prints include “Atelier Du Pere” (Christmas imagery), “Clochette” (ornamental), Couronne” (floral), “Flocon” (snowflakes), “Guirland” (stripes), and “Holly.”

French General offers three quilt patterns using the Joyeux Noel collection: Cadeau, Pomme De Pin,  and Joyeux Noel. Additionally, the Holiday Decoration Set, designed by L’Uccello for French General, features sweet red-and-white ornaments that utilize prints from the collection.

Christmas Patterns
from Piece O' Cake Designs

As pattern designers go, Piece O’ Cake’s Becky Goldsmith and Linda Jenkins offer up some of the best—and most timeless—Christmas quilt and project patterns, including those featured in their Welcome to the North Pole book for Martingale.

Others include a Dinner at Santa’s House Table Runner, Christmas Trees quilt, Christmas Cuteness small quilt set, 1950s Santa Claus quilt, Reindeer Playground quilt, and—our personal favorite—Tree O’Lights Christmas Tree Skirt.

The design duo’s Quilt a New Christmas book for C&T Publishing features full-size appliqué templates and fresh, original patterns for Christmas stockings, quilts, wallhangings, and other projects.

The book is one of several from C&T that offer traditional (and non-traditional!) Christmas and holiday-themed projects with a modern twist.

We Love to Craft-Christmas
by Annabel Wrigley from C&T Publishing

On the subject of gifting, the holiday season is the perfect time to teach children and teenagers about the joy of creating one-of-a-kind gifts, and this recent title from kid-friendly designer Annabel Wrigley is a great place to start.

It includes 17 modern Christmas projects that use either paper or fabric to make projects and gifts like pillows, banners, ornaments, even hair barrettes. They can also make their own stocking—or one for a family member or friend.

It may still be months away, but now is the time to start working on those holiday projects…and counting the days until Christmas (anyone know of a pattern for a multi-month Advent calendar?)!
