Pantone Color of the Year 2016 - Rose Quartz and Serenity
WHAT’S TRENDING:
SOFT PINKS AND SUBTLE BLUES
Pantone surprised many people when it announced its Color (or, in this case, colors) of the Year for 2016, Rose Quartz and Serenity.
“Joined together, Rose Quartz and Serenity demonstrate an inherent balance between a warmer embracing rose tone and the cooler tranquil blue, reflecting a connection and wellness as well as a soothing sense of order and peace,” the organization explained.
The color combination, they continue, also challenges traditional perceptions of color association. In other words, the idea that “blue is for boys” and “pink is for girls” is quickly becoming antiquated.
But even if you prefer your color choices be void of symbolism, you can’t deny that these two colors—essentially baby blue and pink—have grown up quite a bit in the last few years. No longer are these sweet pastels confined to the baby’s nursery. Today, you can find them in a vast range of fabric collections (though we’ll admit that the quilting industry seems to have a preference for pink).

The work of designer Leah Duncan is the ideal example. Working in a soft color palette, Duncan offers designs that are as elegant as they are unique. Her two latest fabric collections for Cloud9Fabrics, Yucca and Lore, both feature soft pinks (and the occasional soft blue) prominently throughout their prints. The addition of deep blue and charcoal accents keep either collection from skewing too sweet.
The latest from quilter and Moda designer Amy Ellis is Serenity, a collection of “calm, soothing colors” that includes grey and navy tones mixed with soft pinks and blues. And Serenity’s subtle geometric patterns allow its calming colors to be the really shine…or, well, softly glow.
Much like Gossamer, her previous collection for Art Gallery fabrics, the new Coastline collection from Sharon Holland incorporates pink in a number of its nautical-themed prints. Where Gossamer’s pinks tended toward blush, Coastline offers pinks of the “sea shell” variety.
But Holland is hardly the only Art Gallery designer with a fondness for pink. In fact, in browsing through the Art Gallery catalogue, pink makes an appearance in more collections than not. (Could pink be the Art Gallery signature color?) This includes—just among their most recent introductions—Pastel Thrift and Heart Melodies by AGF Studio, Lavish by Katarina Roccella, Forest Floor by Bonnie Christine, and Chalk & Paint by Caroline Hulse.
We’re seeing pink and soft blue in Camelot Fabrics’ newest releases. While the With Love collection by Jacqueline Savage is layered in pink, her Beach House prints are available in both Coral and Tide. And it’s blues upon soft blues—naturally—in The Alchemy Collection, Indigo from Camelot Design Studio.
Finally, if you’d like to fully embrace the Rose Quartz meets Serenity Blue color transition, why not rely on basics and blenders to do the job? Michael Miller Basics, Andover’s Mini Pearl Bracelets by Lizzie House, Dear Stella’s Intermix, and—of course—Robert Kaufman’s Kona Cotton Solids all offer plenty in the way of pinks and blues.
