WHAT’S TRENDING: HAPPY HOLIDAYS

 

A look through our notes, photos, and product submissions from the recent Quilt Market in Houston revealed a common theme among many of the new collections, patterns, and books introduced at the show…Christmas and winter-inspired designs.

 

And while the bulk of the fabric collections featured below don’t begin shipping until spring of 2019, our December edition seems like the ideal time to spotlight these fun and festive new products—including many books and patterns available now, just in time for this year’s holiday season.

 

Hello My Deer! from Michael Miller Fabrics

 

Michael Miller Fabrics had an entire “Christmas corner” of their Quilt Market booth devoted to their upcoming holiday-themed fabrics. On display were projects using their four new Christmas collections, including Happy Holly-Days, Three Wise Santas, Home for the Holidays, and—our favorite—Hello My Deer!

 

The latter includes holiday-hued (red, green, black, and white) prints featuring adorably festive fawns and polka dot designs.

Holiday from Andover Fabrics

 

This upcoming holiday-themed collection (available May 2019) from Alison Glass features exactly the kind of fun, colorful designs one would expect from the talented designer. For the Holiday line, Glass puts her unique spin on Scandinavian- and vintage-Christmas-inspired elements in vibrant teals, greens, and pinks.

Make Merry from Windham Fabrics

 

New from designer Maria Carluccio, Make Merry is a new chapter in the “Smarty Cats” story. The collection (shipping in May 2019) features whimsically illustrated and festive felines around a Christmas tree and atop holiday presents. Coordinating prints include Christmas lights, stripes, and starbursts.

Nordic Forest from Blank Quilting

 

Inspired by Scandinavian style, this upcoming (shipping June 2019) winter holiday collection from designer Jo Taylor features festive forest animals in various winter and holiday scenes, as well as gnomes, snowflake plaids, stripes, and patchwork designs.

Fa La La Llama from Dear Stella

 

This new collection (in stores in July 2019) offers a holiday-themed take on two of today’s most popular design motifs: llamas and cacti. The collection’s namesake print features various snow globes containing llamas (of course!), penguins, bears, cacti strung with holiday lights, and Santa.

Winter Woodland from Clothworks

 

In addition to the Christmas-themed Merry & Bright and Purrfect Christmas, Clothworks also recently introduced the snowy Winter Woodland collection (available in summer 2019). Designed by Diane Neukirch, the collection features sweet woodland creatures and serene winter scenes, plus striped and snowflake prints.

‘Tis the Season from Elizabeth’s Studio

 

This upcoming collection (available May-June 2019) from designer Alan Giana features traditional—and picturesque!—holiday scenes in a snowy winter setting. ‘Tis the Season includes two panel prints—one with red “sashing” and one with green—and a main scenic print.

Merry and Bright from Riley Blake Designs

 

There is something delightfully nostalgic about this new collection (available May 2019) from designer Dani Mostad for Echo Park Paper Co. Merry and Bright features classic Christmas designs—Santa and sleigh, vintage ornaments, cheerful packages, tree-toting cars, reindeer, snowflakes, and holiday text—in an updated red, green, mint, and pink palette. The collection also includes an Advent-themed panel print in two color options.

Winter Shimmer from Robert Kaufman Fabrics

 

Among the many upcoming holiday- and winter-themed collections from Robert Kaufman—including Winter’s Grandeur 7, Jolly Saint Nick, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Holly Jolly Christmas, and Holiday Flourish 12—the one that caught our eye at Market was Winter Shimmer by designer Jennifer Sampou.

 

This gorgeous collection features winter-hued (soft blues, whites, and neutrals) prints of woodland scenes, foliage, snowflakes, and starbursts.

Holiday Road Trip from Studioe Fabrics

 

In addition to their other newly released holiday-themed collections—Holly Jolly Christmas, Snowy Magic, Christmas Joy, and Yuletide Cheer—Studioe recently introduced the Holiday Road Trip collection from design brand DT-K Signature.

 

This playful and unique collection features car and truck block, allover, and stripe designs, dogs decked out in winter gear, and coordinating mistletoe, star, snowflake, and check prints, all in a classic red, black, and white/beige color palette.

Winter Lights from P&B Textiles

 

The upcoming (shipping in May 2019) Winter Lights collection from designer Susan Rooney incorporates colorful abstract and geometric designs alongside adorable penguins, polar bears, and snowmen. The collection also includes nine coordinating patterns—prisms, stars, trees, abstracted snow—in several colorways.

 

Also new from P&B Textiles is designer Michelle Palmer’s Winter Snowmen Wreaths collection, which features sweet snowmen and lively cardinals in winter scenes and colors.

Hotcake Cuddle Kit—Bearclaw from Shannon Fabrics

 

Shannon Fabrics introduced a variety of new fabric kits this fall, including their new Hot Cakes Cuddle® Kits, which include self-binding blankets with Cuddle® fabric on both sides. The Bearclaw Hotcake Cuddle® Kit includes their Buffalo Check Cuddle® in Scarlet, plus Ivory Luxe Cuddle® Sherpa for the backing. Adorable baby not included.

 

Also new from Shannon is their Sensational Stips Cuddle Kit A ‘Moose’ D, which includes strips for a quilt top (ForestPark in Scarlet, Buffalo Check in Scarlet, LCLuna in Black, and LCHeather in Shadow), pattern, and binding (LCLuna in Black).

Merry Mugs Kit from Rachel’s of Greenfield

 

The company offers a variety of Christmas ornament kits that include wool felt, embellishments, and illustrated instructions for creating handmade ornaments. The newest, the Merry Mugs Kit, features mug-shaped ornament designs that are open at the top to be filled with gift cards or other small items. The kit includes materials for creating six different mug ornaments.

Wrapped in Winter Pattern from The Whole Country Caboodle

 

This new pattern set includes instructions for four cute Christmas-themed items: a Bucket Wrap & Top, Mug Cozie, Jar Wrap, and four Winter Appliqués. The company also offers several other new Christmas-themed Pre-Cut Fused Appliqué Kits, plus the Away in a Manger Table Topper Pattern, Away in a Manger Advent Calendar Kit,  and Winter Coasters Pattern and Mug Kit.

Nifty Christmas Pattern from The Stitch TV Show

The beginner/intermediate friendly Nifty Christmas pattern uses basic fusible appliqué, piecing, and quilting to create a holiday-themed wallhanging or table runner. The pattern is pre-cut friendly and uses 5” charm squares.

 

Peek-a-Gnome Pattern from Around the Bobbin

 

Depending upon fabric choices and optional verbiage, this whimsical new pattern can be holiday-themed…or not. Pattern includes options for a wallhanging or gnome placemats using raw-edge appliqué and easy piecing techniques and can be created with the optional “Good Jul” (meaning “Merry Christmas” in Danish) or “Welcome” text in the upper left.

 

Moda All-Stars: Merry Makers from Martingale

 

This recent release from Moda All-Stars—and compiled by Lissa Alexander—includes more than 15 handmade gift projects (to give or keep!), including stockings, pincushions, coasters, lap quilts, table runners, and other Christmas-themed items. Readers can also enjoy learning about the favorite seasonal traditions of the featured “All-Stars” in a series of Q&As. All royalties from the sale of the book will be donated to the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation.

 

Christmas RAPPing Book from Eye of the Beholder Quilt Design

 

This new quilting book by Margaret Brewster Willingham and Nan Baker features 10+ projects featuring reverse appliqué and paper piecing (RAPP). The projects include table runners, wallhangings, full-size quilts, Christmas tree decorations, and more. The book includes multiple quilt sizing options and alternative color variations, as well as full-sized patterns.
