Farm Fresh by Birch Fabrics

WHAT’S TRENDING: FARM TO MARKET

Among a number of the fabrics introduced at spring Quilt Market and
released in recent months, we’ve noticed a fun recurring theme: farm and
farmer’s market motifs.

We are loving both the diversity in designs and the versatility of the fabrics, which could just as easily be used for quilts or home dec as they could for children’s items.

The Farm Fresh collection from Birch Fabrics is the perfect example. It’s clean designs and color palette give the collection’s motifs—farm animals, eggs, chicken wire, and even barn floors and doors—a modern feel. Farm Fresh is available in organic cotton, knit, and double gauze.

The identically named Farm Fresh collection from Dear Stella features clean designs in softer shades of denim, sienna, smoke (gray), and butter, making it ideal for baby and children’s projects. The collection’s prints include both farm imagery (barns, tractors, farm animals) and sweet baby-themed “Farm Blocks” and “Wheelies” fabrics. It also pairs nicely with Dear Stella’s Intermix basics.

The Farm Fun collection by Stacy Iset Hsu for Moda Fabrics offers a sunny, colorful take on the farm theme, with whimsical farmstead prints, folk-art-inspired designs, florals, stripes of tractors/row crops, and repeating egg, milk bottle, and abstract chicken wire prints. The collection also includes a panel print with patterns for constructing stuffed farm animals.

Farm by French Bull

Fans of French Bull designs will love French Bull designer Jackie Shapiro’s new Farm collection for Windham Fabrics. Featuring French Bull’s signature aesthetic, the collection includes brightly hued, simple illustrations of farm animals and imagery, a farm-animal-themed word print, cheerful cloud design, and textured wood prints.

The rightly named Funny Farm by Diane Eichler for Studio E Fabrics features similar elements—fun with farm animals and farm-animal “sound” prints—in a vivid palette of bright pastels. Studio E also offers two free Funny Farm quilt patterns, the first of which features the collection’s panel print—with adorable stacked farm animals—at center.

Farm Girl

Already in stores, the Farm Girl collection by October Afternoon for Riley Blake offers a charming, vintage-inspired take on the farm theme, with its main “Farm Girl” print, accompany “Mason Jars” and “Canning Labels” fabrics, and “Cherry Pie,” “Hay Stack,” and “Pie Tins designs.”

The focus of Quilting Treasures’ Farmer's Market collection is less farm and more market. Prints include a veggie toss, text print with farmer’s market “lingo,” classic tablecloth-inspired checks, and patchwork and panel prints featuring country-kitchen-friendly produce and market motifs.

A separate piece could easily be written on fabrics featuring farmer’s market produce—fruit, veggies, preserves—but in keeping with our new and farm-themed focus, we’ll save that for another time. For now, look for the aforementioned farm-centric collections in shops now or appearing on shelves in the next few months.
