Collections with character…

THE YEAR IN LICENSED PRINTS

What do Captain America, Captain Jean-Luc Picard, The Cat in the Hat, and “The Cow Jumping Over the Moon” all have in common?

No, they will not be participants in an upcoming, ill-fated reality television show (though, just imagine that cast of housemates!). Rather, all of the aforementioned characters appear in fabric form on some of the industry’s most recent-to-be-released licensed collections.

From classic bedtime books to beloved superheroes to popular PBS dramas, today’s licensed fabrics span the spectrum and offer buyers designs that are appealing both visually and commercially.

GET ALL THE DETAILS...

In honor of the forthcoming Minions movie (to be released in July 2015), Quilting Treasures recently introduced its Despicable Me-1 in a Minion. The collection features various versions of the lovable, Twinkie-like creatures, including a “Tossed Minions” print, “Geo Blenders,” “Graphic Set Minions,” panel prints, and—our personal favorite—the “Bello Minions” print.

Thomas the Train-Fast Friends!

Lalaloopsy Cute as a Button

As other current children’s cartoon characters go, customers have countless options in licensed fabrics, including Quilting Treasures Thomas the Train-Fast Friends!, their Lalaloopsy-Cute as a Button, and David Textiles’ Paw Patrol collection (available June 2015). And Robert Kaufman begins shipping its Pokémon collection—based on the longtime cartoon, video-, and trading-card-game characters—in May.

Book-loving kiddos (and nostalgic adults) have plenty of reason to celebrate with the release of several children’s-lit-inspired collections in the last year.

Paddington Bear

Camelot Fabrics’ Paddington Bear collection features playful depictions of the friendly—and, often, unintentionally mischievous—character, first introduced to readers in 1958. Prints include “Making a Mess,” “Toile,” “Tonal Paddington,” “Tiles,” and “Wandering Bear,” all of which remain true to the original illustrations of the marmalade-enthusiast in a duffle coat.

On the super-sweet side, Clothworks’ Guess How Much I Love You™ collection (available in summer 2015) includes images from the darling children’s book by Sam McBratney, and illustrated by Anita Jeram. Several prints of “Big” and “Little” Nutbrown Hare are complimented by small prints and polka dots, and the collection includes both cotton and flannel fabrics.

Goodnight Moon

Eric Carle

Last year, Cloud9 Fabrics released its Goodnight Moon collection based on the classic bedtime book of the same name by Margaret Wise Brown. Among the the collection’s designs longtime Goodnight Moon readers will immediately identify the book’s iconic color scheme and key phrases—also the collection’s print names—like “The Great Green Room,” “Hush,” “Starry Night,” “Over the Moon,” “Mouse,” and “Red Balloon.”

And for several years now, Andover has added to its Eric Carle collection—based on the work of the popular and distinctive illustrator—with lines like The Very Hungry Caterpillar (the original as well as Christmas, Draftstopper, Encore, Coloring Book, and flannel additions), plus their more recent Polar Bear Kids and Happy Birthday collections.

Marvel Comics II

Star Trek: The Next Generation

The Egyptian Collection

Still, licensed fabrics aren’t limited to children’s cartoons and books. Camelot Fabrics’ Marvel Comics II is cool, colorful, and graphic (and as likely to appeal to adults as it does children). Among the superheroes practically leaping from the fabric designs are Iron Man, Spider-Man, Thor, Captain America, Daredevil, and The Hulk. Although some of the collection’s prints take a bit of artistic liberty, others appear as if ripped straight from the pages of a classic comic book.

If your interests skew more space science fiction than caped crusader, Camelot also offers a Star Trek: The Next Generation collection featuring the cast of characters (and crew of the Enterprise) from the popular follow-up series to the original Star Trek. The collection also includes illustrated “Enterprise” and “Icons” prints.

Finally, back in 2013, Andover Fabrics released the first of its Downton Abbey collections, inspired by the hugely popular television drama. In February, the latest addition to series—Downton Abbey-The Egyptian Collection—began shipping. Like its predecessors, The Egyptian Collection offers up a less-than-literal interpretation on the Downton Abbey theme with designs that honor the motifs, colors, and overall aesthetic characteristic of the show.

And there you have it…from the “Despicable” to the Dowager, there are endless options for finding a character collection that tickles your fancy and inspires your next project.
